Barelycorn Fest Review

With legends like David Kramer, and Steve Newman’s Trio, if you missed it, we’re sorry… On Saturday, 7 March 2015, Paul Bothner Music sent a team to set up a display at the Baxter Theatre for this year’s Barleycorn Festival! With 19 guitars, 10 amplifiers, a bunch of stomp boxes and a drum kit, people stopped by to take a look at the variety of goods we took to show off.

We had a wall of banners and a massive window of opportunity for the crowd of attendees. Some got to jam on the gear between the awesome legends’ performances. Imagine having all these great players at one venue, on the same day… What a gig? Steve Newman is a true master of the art of blending exceptional melodic and rhythmic ideas, with a sense of harmonically unusual note values.

He plBothner Displayays the instrument like it’s a new and exciting phenomenon, not like some of the bland fare on radio. This man and his super awesome compadres, the experimental funk, hip jazz, outside of the envelope, jazz shred, African icons, Hilton Schilder and Grand-master Errol Dyers know how to feed some of the best notes to our ears, using sumptuous ideas. If you were looking for real chops or the funk which can only be felt properly, when Errol digs into the strings, Hilton trips his fingers across to the outside, or when Steve opens up a vision which is beyond the traditional human mind’s eye, we hope you were there…

The list of great performers includes that very fiery, melodic, high speed, slow burning Blues Man, Albert Frost; probably one of the most successful and famous of the neo-traditional entertainer / producer / songwriters David Kramer; chart topping, globe-trotting, alternative rocking MacStanley; and the newer legends-in-the-making: Digby & the Lullaby, Hatchetman & Jennifer Eaves.

At the end of the evening, our staff (pictured left) met some really cool people who likewise share our passion for music, musicians, and spectators. Hope to see you there next time…
