What is The Barleycorn?

The Barleycorn’s principle function is to promote the best local, original music. Besides the weekly shows, the Barleycorn runs an annual songwriting competition as well as their annual music festival.

The Barleycorn is South Africa’s oldest folk music club, and was established in 1975. It was founded by a group of musicians who agreed to a regular jam session and to “learn from one another and consume beer”.

Over the past 40 years, the club has met almost every week to provide a platform for musicians to showcase their talents. The audience is warm and very supportive. In the beginning the music was primarily traditional folk, but over the years the club has become known for original local music.
